4 Ways to Improve Your Ugly Concrete Driveway

If your concrete driveway has outlived its better days or if you are simply fed up with the drab, gray surface, there is good news. You have a number of options to choose from that will not only give old, ugly driveways a facelift, but may also help to increase the resale value of your home. Whether your driveway simply needs a cosmetic facelift or there are cracks, chips and other problems, there is a solution to make it more attractive.

Concrete Staining

Concrete driveways that are in decent condition, including free from oil, cracks, grime or other coatings may be ready for a process known as concrete staining. Unlike paint, the stain will permeate the concrete, which gives the driveway a bold, translucent color with a variegated or mottled appearance. Concrete stains are available in both acid stains and water-based stains. An acid stain limits the color choices to earth tones, but if you choose water-based, you will have a wide range of color options to choose from. You can even choose to have special effects, such as the look of marble, natural stone or wood.

Concrete Stamping

Concrete stamping is a great option for those who want driveways with a natural stone appearance. Depending on the pattern or color you choose, you can have the look of cobblestone, tile, flagstone, brick or slate without the expensive cost associated with these natural products. Stamped concrete is also a low-maintenance option and when it is properly installed, it will last for decades. Stamped concrete can be used on concrete overlays, which are typically used on driveways with some damage, but it can be applied directly to a driveway that is in good condition.

Concrete Etching

If you want to transform your ugly driveway into a one-of-a-kind work of art, you should consider concrete etching. This technique requires the use of special tools that allow the contractor to permanently etch patterns and designs into existing concrete driveways. There are limited options on the designs and patterns you can use. For example, you can choose to have special logos, graphics, stone patterns or even your initials etched into the driveway. Staining over the etching will add even more customization and uniqueness to the driveway.

Replace Existing Driveways

If your current concrete driveway is beyond hope and help, you might want to consider removing it and starting over with a new surface that you can stain or stamp. If you want something completely different, you can choose to replace the driveway with pavers. Paving stones are available in several colors and textures. The pavers are installed over a sub-concrete base. The interlocking pavers can be used to create a variety of interesting patterns. Pavers are typically more expensive that most of the other options, but they are durable and you can drive on them immediately after they have been installed.
Many of these options that are designed to improve the look of driveways can be used in combination with each other to create customized looks. For example, stamping and etching can both be stained for a more unique visual appearance.
